The GENERATION study follows the journey of young Australians, as they transition to life beyond school.

This landmark national study aims to reflect the collective experience of young Australians – while providing both participants and educators valuable insights into young people’s career interests and post-school life. GENERATION started in 2022 with a representative cohort of Year 10 students from Australian schools. Young people are surveyed annually, until 2031.

This year we are conducting our fifth survey. We are also inviting eligible young people completing their first year of university studies to also participate in the survey.

We want to hear about your reflections and experiences of high school and the activities you have been engaging with since you left school. No matter where you are in your journey, whether you are studying, completing an apprenticeship or traineeship, working, travelling, or still finding your way, we want to hear from you.

Your participation is very important so that State and Federal Governments can improve services for young people across Australia.

How do I get involved?

This year, our GENERATION cohort will be comprised of three groups of young people, all of whom were in Year 10 in 2022.

01.

You are a continuing GENERATION participant whose school participated in the first survey of GENERATION . You were invited to participate in Wave 1 as a Year 10 student in 2022 and have been recontacted for follow up surveys. We now invite you to participate again in 2026. Even if you have not participated every year, we would still like to hear about you and your experiences.

02.

You were invited to participate in GENERATION in 2025 for the first time and have agreed to be recontacted. You are now invited to participate in your second round of the GENERATION survey.

03.

At the end of your Student Experience Survey (SES), you have received information about the GENERATION study and have been asked to provide your contact details. By providing your contact information, you have not yet joined the study; you have only agreed to potentially receive an invitation to complete the survey.

We are asking only those eligible young people, who were in Year 10 at an Australian school in 2022, to provide their contact information. If you choose to provide your contact information, you may receive an invitation to complete the GENERATION survey from September 2026. You will be asked to provide information about your transitions to life after high school. We will also ask you some information about your background, who you were as a Year 10 student, and who you are now.

What does it mean for me?

GENERATION is a chance to share your unique story – what you care about, what you're interested in, and what you hope for in the future.
You will be asked to voluntarily participate in a 30 minute online survey.
You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time and have your contact information removed from further use.

Your answers will not be identifiable.
